A tragic underground mining accident at the Bailey Mine in Aleppo Township has claimed the life of a miner, with authorities confirming the death of 34-year-old Zachary Wolfe of Rices Landing following a rockfall incident.
According to the Greene County Coroner’s Office, Wolfe was pronounced dead at 11:39 p.m. after the fatal incident occurred around 11 p.m. Pennsylvania State Police reported that troopers were dispatched to the Crabapple Portal of the mine at approximately 11:21 p.m. after receiving reports of a serious underground accident.
Preliminary information indicates that Wolfe was working underground when he was struck by falling rock. Emergency response teams quickly arrived at the scene, but he was later confirmed deceased. Officials stated that the incident remains under active investigation as authorities work to determine the precise circumstances that led to the collapse.
Emergency management officials also confirmed that at least one additional worker was injured in the incident and was airlifted from the mine after suffering a head injury. The injured worker received urgent medical attention, though further updates on their condition have not yet been released.
The mine, operated by Core Natural Resources, issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss and confirming its cooperation with both state and federal investigators.
